Seafood Sold at Sydney Fish Market is Safe to Eat

Sydney Fish Market

Sydney Fish Market assures Sydneysiders that no seafood sold at Sydney Fish Market is caught in Sydney Harbour; following last nights 7:30 Report on ABC television that showed elevated levels of dioxin in fisherman and their families who have regularly eaten seafood from Sydney Harbour. As the biggest seller of seafood in New South Wales, Sydney Fish Market secures its products from all over Australia. 65 percent of the Markets seafood comes from New South Wales, none of which is sourced from Sydney Harbour.

In 2005, Sydney Harbour catch represented less than half of one percent of all seafood sold through Sydney Fish Markets auction, a tiny portion of overall sales. This means it is highly unlikely Sydneysiders would have purchased Sydney Harbour caught seafood prior to the ban.

Species such as Sydney Rock oysters, Balmain bugs and local lobster whose names might imply their origin is Sydney Harbour, come from outside Sydney and are safe to eat.

Grahame Turk, Sydney Fish Markets Managing Director said, Sydney Fish Market acted immediately to ensure Harbour caught seafood was not sold at Sydney Fish Market, once we were advised of the dioxin problem on the 24 January 2006.

Sydney Fish Market has publicly supported the ban on harbour caught seafood from the outset, and has acted to assist the fishermen in their efforts to seek compensation, he said.

It is important, however the problem of Homebush Bay does not overshadow the significant health benefits of a diet containing seafood.

There are so many nutritional positives associated with eating seafood regularly it would be a great shame if people reduced their enjoyment of seafood out of confusion about where seafood in Sydney comes from, he said.

Australian seafood is regarded as the best in the world and Sydneysiders should be confident Sydney Fish Market will continue to supply them with the freshest and most diverse range of seafood from all over Australia.
