Petuna has been awarded the Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) certification, a standard that only the world's most sustainable Salmon and Ocean Trout farms can attain.

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) assessed every aspect of Petuna's operations including its environmental responsibility, community relations, employee safety, food safety, animal health and its care of wildlife, to ensure it is a world-class organisation.

“With only 15 per cent of aquaculture ventures worldwide receiving third party accreditation, we are extremely proud to have Petuna recognised for our sustainability work.”

Grown in the World Heritage listed Macquarie Harbour on the West Coast, Petuna Ocean Trout and Atlantic Salmon come from the remote South-west coast of Tasmania, where the cool wilderness waters of the Franklin-Gordon Rivers collide with the salt water of the Great Southern Ocean.

The unique currents of fresh water, mixed with the salt water from the Great Southern Ocean in Macquarie Harbour, mimic the natural environment where Salmon and Ocean Trout thrive and grow, ensuring that Petuna can deliver the best quality fish around Australia from this pristine environment. 

Established in 1949 by Peter and Una Rockliff, Petuna employs over 270 full-time staff located in sites around Tasmania. Peter and Una have spent decades perfecting their artisan seafood produce.

Our Petuna Story

Peter and Una Rockliff together with their family have spent many decades perfecting their artisan tasting products.  Proudly Tasmanian, Petuna was established in 1949 and is the largest Multi-Species Seafood provider from Tasmania. 

'Born to fish' Peter as a boy spent much of his time fishing.  In 1949 he travelled eastward along the coast looking for fish.  He met Una Barnett, who was from a well-known fishing family in Bridport and they were married soon after.

Together they joined their first names together to name one of their boats “Petuna”.  In these early days Peter would go out fishing and Una would line up perspective customers on wharf and “pre-sell” Peter's fresh daily catch. By the 1990's Peter and Una had significantly grown their local business and evolved the business to include Aquaculture.  A pioneering couple, Peter and Una's contribution to the Tasmanian economy and the Aquaculture industry has been recognised with an Order of Australia Medal.  While in their 80's now, Peter and Una are still active in the business, with Peter regularly seen at the Devonport production facility.

In 2010 Sealord Group, Australia and New Zealand's leading sustainable seafood brand, became a 50% partner in Petuna Aquaculture. The combination of a family business with a global enterprise has allowed for significant multi-million dollar investments, including a major upgrade at the Devonport factory and large investments in marine farm and hatchery infrastructure at Macquarie Harbour and Cressy.
