New York And New Markets Beckon For Welsh Producers At Summer Fancy Food Show

Welsh Assembly Government Food Division

Welsh food and drink producers are preparing to travel across the pond for the 54th Summer Fancy Food Show in New York (June 29 July 1)

Held at the Jacob K. Javits Centre, the 2008 show promises to be the largest ever with 140,000 products, 2,300 exhibitors from 73 countries, and 52 international pavilions.

Organised by International Business Wales on behalf of the Food and Market Development Division within the Welsh Assembly Government, seven Welsh companies will be exhibiting under the True Taste banner, three for the first time.

Making its True Taste debut at the event will be Britains only dedicated organic production smokehouse - The Organic Smokehouse.

The Powys company recently launched its new packaging featuring images from its natural surroundings such as oak leaves and sawn wood to convey the natural qualities of its smoked products which include salmon, cheese, butter, salt, olive oil, and salmon mousse.

Artisan millers, Matt and Anne Scott of Bacheldre Watermill will be making their first trip across the pond too with their organic flours.

Traditional water and electrically operated equipment and only the highest quality organic grain and seeds are used to produce the flours which are Soil Association approved. Eight flours will be exhibited including its Oak Smoked Stoneground Strong Malted Blend Flour, Malted 5 Seed Flour, Strong Unbleached White, Strong 100% Wholemeal, Strong Malted Blend, Plain White, and Spelt & Rye.

Also making its debut at the New York Summer Fancy Food Show will be Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar, marketed by Fayrefield Foods Ltd.

Colliers remarkable taste and unusual heritage made it a double winner at Nantwich (UK) one of the worlds most prestigious cheese shows, and is now the largest and most successful Welsh cheese brand in the UK.

The Hurns Brewing Company, which produces the Tomos Watkin range of beers debuted in America in 2006, and following a trade mission to New York organised by International Business Wales secured a deal with state-side distributor St Killian to import and distribute its beers to 50 US states.

Hurns will be continuing its drive into the America market and during the Summer Fancy Food Show will be taking orders for St Killian.

The Anglesey Sea Salt Company / Halen Mn will be showing its range including the new organic celery sea salt and the companys new 10g tubes of Halen Mn vanilla, organic spiced, oak smoked, pure and organic celery salts, which are perfect for picnics and gift baskets.

Halen Mns oak smoked sea salt has recently been included on the menu at one of New Yorks top restaurants, Gordon Ramsay at The London. The sea salt is one of the ingredients in a new dessert produced by the two Michelin-starred restaurant, and its inclusion is the result of a lunch held in February at the restaurant for New York media, hosted by the Welsh Assembly Government, Visit Wales and Welsh Rarebits as part of Wales Week USA.

Queens Award for Enterprise; International Trade Winner 2008, Drink Exporter of the Year and Welsh Exporter of the Year at the 2007 Food from Britain Export Awards, Llanllyr Water Company will be showing its whole range of Llanllyr Source still and sparkling water in 750ml and 330ml glass bottles.

The True Taste Award winner which was also judged best tasting British water by Imbibe Magazine will also be showing its new 100% recyclable 330ml cans of still and sparkling water. The company is fully licensed to sell in New York State and all over the USA.

The Patchwork Traditional Food Company, which now produces its pts in America as well as Wales, will be unveiling its vibrant new-look packaging at the Show.

Produced in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania the pts are primarily sold in America in specialty food stores and high-end independent supermarkets such as, Dean & DeLuca, Fairway, Amish Market and Graces Marketplace.

On show in New York will be six varieties of pt: Brandy & Herb, Triple Sec & Orange, Tequila & Cranberry, Bourbon & Blueberry, Mushroom & Garlic, and Welsh Dragons Pt (Venison Liver with Chile)
