New Royal Welsh Food Hall Will Be Foodie Heaven

Welsh Assembly Government Food Division

When the new £1.6million Food Hall opens at next weeks Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells (July 19-22), the doors will open on a taste experience like nothing that has gone before.

The Welsh Assembly Government-managed Food Hall has become one of the major attractions of the Royal Welsh Show, creating an invaluable shop window for Welsh food and drink producers at an event which annually attracts more than 200,000 visitors.

The new Food Hall will be officially opened at 11am on the first day of the Show (Monday July 19th) by Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones.

She said: The new food hall on the showground at Llanelwedd will be a stage for more Welsh food and drink producers to show their quality products to the public and I look forward to officially opening and visiting it during the Royal Welsh Show.

With double the exhibition space of the old building, the new Food Hall provides companies with larger unit space, and better access to water and electricity.

The individual stands are larger than those in the previous Food Hall, giving exhibitors more space to promote themselves and their products.

Fifty-four food and drink companies are showcasing their products, as compared with 44 at the old hall, from meat and cheese to cakes and cider.

Among them are a number of ice cream companies, which were previously situated outside the Food Hall, the increased space allowing them to come in from the cold and take their place among the foodie throng. Among them will be Food Hall newcomer, Môn ar Lwy from Anglesey who produce artisan ice creams with a contemporary twist.

There are several new faces too including Cwmbran butchers Douglas Willis, Caws Rhydydelyn, Cooper & Parish Ltd, ..Blodyn Aur, Welsh Cottage Cakes, Blue Wood Cottage Berry Farm Ltd, and The Celt Experience.

While a large proportion of the exhibitors are True Taste Award winners such as tomato producers Stubbins Marketing Ltd, Patchwork Traditional Foods, The Hurns Brewing Company, and Caws Cenarth Cheese.

Many show-goers make a bee-line each year for the Food Hall to buy their favourite products from Food Hall stalwarts like Llaeth y Llan, Popty Cara, Ralphs Cider, and Tregroes Waffle Bakery Ltd.

The new Food Hall also has on-site cold storage facilities, an integral food crèche for visitors to leave their purchases and collect later, dedicated parking for refrigerated vehicles, and a service bay with wide access for deliveries.

One of the most ambitious projects completed at the Royal Welsh Showground, the funds currently standing at £1,630,195 have been mainly raised by the feature counties of Carmarthen (2005), Clwyd (2008), Glamorgan (2009) and this years feature county, Ceredigion.

The Royal Welsh Centenary Fund, to which all the counties of Wales contributed in 2004, has also made a substantial contribution to the Food Halls construction.

Ends.
