La Strada is neither a fine dining restaurant nor a laid-back caffe; it is simply a very smart and modern eatery where diners can tuck into hearty and flavourful Italian food.
Designed by the famed Mr. Tan Kay Ngee, who is also behind the Groups two other outlets- Canele @ Paragon and Macaron Dessert Bar- the concept of the design revolves around the idea of streetscape, extracted from the restaurant name La Strada, which literally means The Street in Italian.
Taking into consideration that a typical street pattern consists of many human activities and visual movement, the new faade greets the monotonous streetscape with multiple distorted visual reflections from the street. This is achieved by varying the spacing of black mullions with glass panel infill, while setting them at different angles to the ground, thereby creating interesting patterns and street textures.
The wall of movement strips in white, yellow, orange and red at the entrance are abstracted from photographic visual images of streetscapes, captured when using long camera shutter speed to trace the various lines of activities that passes through the lens. This colourful element stands out as a feature from the otherwise black-themed faade.
The main dining room sits 44 while an adjoining private room accommodates another 10.The newly created al-fresco dining area which overlooks Claymore Hill has a seating capacity for 12.
The Resident Chef is Darence Wee, one of the few young Singaporean Italian chefs in the Lion City. Darences repertoire of cuisine is inspired by the spirit of seasonal simplicity in Italian cooking and most of his produce are sourced from Italy and Australia. All pastas, marinades and the likes are freshly made on the premises.
Such attention to details, paired with a cooking style that exhibits great finesse, allow the sublime flavours of the simplest dish to shine through, making La Strada not just a neighbourhood hangout, but a destination restaurant as well.
The manager is Subramaniam, who was formerly the Assistant Manager at Au Jardin Restaurant in the Singapore Botanics Garden. Considered to be one of the stalwarts of Les Amis Group, Subra has attracted a loyal following with his friendly and jovial service.
Categorized by country [60% Italian, 20% French and 20% New World labels], La Stradas wine list offers affordability as well as luxury, with prices ranging from $58 to $700 per bottle. 8 wines are served by the glass and should diners prefer to bring their own, a corkage charge of $30 applies.
The diverse menu captures the essence of an Italian eatery like no other comfort food such as pastas and authentic, thin-crust pizzas are featured alongside classic and hearty dishes; all with an emphasis on the freshness of ingredients. Besides its dine-in operations, La Strada also provides catering services for corporate or home parties, and the restaurant is available for private events.
