About the Restaurant
Located on the second floor of Customs House at Collyer Quay, Kinki Restaurant + Bar is one of the latest gems to join the exciting developments along the Marina Bay Waterfront. A refreshing urban concept, its cheeky moniker is one of the many things that sets Kinki apart from conventional Japanese restaurants.
Kinki's decidedly hip-urban décor provides a strong first impression: spanned across the floor near the entrance is a magnificent floor mural designed by Chris Garver of Miami Ink fame. Bearing vibrant colours and echoing Chris Garver's signature style of intricate Japanese tattoo designs, the artwork is attention-grabbing the moment one steps out of the lift and into the restaurant. Exposed piping and lighting fixtures fashioned out of fishing hooks on the ceiling add an industrial rawness to the urban vibe of the restaurant.
The restaurant's strategic location offers an impressive view of the waterfront with a breathtaking skyline of Marina Bay. With a maximum seating capacity of up to 56 guests, the restaurant includes a sushi counter that accommodates up to 10 as well as and bar seats for those who pop by for a quick meal or tipple.
Menu Highlights
Creativity does not only account for the atmosphere design of Kinki - it is also evident in the cuisine style. The menu explores ingredients and cooking techniques that complement Japanese cuisine while retaining an emphasis on top quality, uncompromising freshness and incorporating rare and seasonal items imported from Japan.
The refreshing starter, Momotaro Tomato ($17) features the premium Japanese tomato known for its rich sweetness and is well complemented by a ginger dressing with notes of sesame oil.
Disparate flavours and textures are melded in delicate and bold ways in creations such as the Foie Gras & Scallop Sushi ($22/2pcs); featuring an unexpected pairing of succulent raw Hokkaido scallop and pan-seared foie gras.
The King Salmon Maki ($22) is an interesting combination of king salmon, ricotta, avocado and cucumber and the roll is covered in crispy tempura flakes.
One of Kinki's signatures, the Pomegranate Miso Black Cod ($26) is a wonderful adaptation of the household dish. Instead of the usual miso, a special pomegranate-honey miso is used to add tanginess to the delicate sweetness of the cod.
Another must-try is the Kinki Style Okonomiyaki ($27), where the usual Japanese 'pancake' base is substituted with Kinki's version of a homemade baguette base. Seductively crispy, the okonomiyaki is generously topped with Hokkaido scallops, prawns, applewood-smoked bacon, sweet onions and mozzarella. A vegetarian version with tomatoes, wild mushrooms, baby eggplant and baby spinach is also available.
Speciality Drinks
At Kinki, an infectious mix of house and acid jazz creates an atmosphere for guests to chill out. The fully-stocked bar has an extensive list of unique concoctions made with fresh and premium ingredients: sip on cocktails with zing such as the Ginger Kumquat Caipirinha ($18) and Ume Mojito ($18) or opt for a sophisticated Japanese Pear Martini ($20) or Tokio-politan ($20), which is blended from yuzu sake, orange liqueur, fresh lime and cranberry juice.
Handpicked sakes like the premium Yaegaki Jyunmai Daiginyo Aono-mu ($40 for 180ml, $155 for 720ml) and the medium-bodied Yaegaki Tokubetsu Jyunmai Shirono-mu ($30 for 180ml, $110 for 720ml) are also available for food pairing or to be sampled alone.
About the Bar
An extension of the restaurant is its rooftop bar located on the the third floor which overlooks a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Marina Bay skyline and waterfront. Its edgy and urban vibe is reminiscent of Tokyo's hip street watering holes. With an entrance flanked by ambient, red lanterns and a riot of vibrant colours and graffiti scattered across the bar, the casual mood makes it a great place to chill with friends and unwind after a hard day's work.
The bar snacks menu is a great preview to the restaurant's bold, modern Japanese fare. Orders are prepared a la minute from the restaurant's kitchen and include items like Sushi Bites ($20) and Temaki Bites ($18) - sampler platters of assorted sushi and hand rolls, respectively. Heartier options include the popular Japanese pancake, Kinki-style Okonomiyaki ($26), which comes with delectable toppings like Hokkaido scallops, prawns and smoked bacon.
With fresh design and excellent Japanese fare with a twist, Kinki is definitely a funky fit-out worth a visit!
