Equitrade Loads Fairer this Easter

Malagasy

Malagasy is gourmet chocolate at its most pure, fine and ethical. Lovingly crafted in Madagascar from only cocoa solids, cocoa butter, sugar and a pinch of (GM free) lecithin, Malagasy is already gaining a reputation for taste among chocolate connoisseurs and chefs and for its pioneering and entrepreneurial Equitrade philosophy, recently scooping both the silver prize for best bean to bar at the 2006 Academy of Chocolate Awards and the 2006 Start Up Business of the Year Award from the North West Society of Chartered Accountants.

Malagasys chocolates are the worlds first Equitrade products and were classified as one of the most ethical chocolate bars on the market by Ethical Consumer Magazine (Nov/Dec issue, 2006). Equitrade is a principle of trading that works with the finished, packaged packaged product and not just the raw cocoa beans. This increases value and profitability for the Malagasy people.

Neil Kelsall, Managing Director of Malagasy Ltd, defines Equitrade as follows:

"Instead of exporting the raw ingredients by ship and then processing and packaging in Europe and the USA, we are encouraging processing and packaging in Madagascar so that we are capitalising on the freshness and local know-how in crafting fine chocolate and we are exporting more value, as you will always need to export more kilogramme weight in cocoa beans compared to actual chocolate. This means working through local companies and suppliers in Madagascar, to make world class finished products that compete against companies in the rich nations that normally import cash crops from developing nations, and process the added value in the rich economies."

The aim of Equitrade is to end poverty through sustainable commercial international trade. For more information see www.equitrade.org NOTE: For the consumer, Malagasy chocolates are currently stocked in Waitrose and in all leading fine chocolate outlets across the UK. A complete departure from all other Madagascar chocolates.virtually nothing about this bar is short of perfectone of the great chocolates of the world. The flavour is simply awe-inspiring. Alex Rast, of leading fine chocolate website, www.seventypercent.com The Sambirano has an earthy, woody flavour due to the fermentation and the short length of time from tree to manufacture of the chocolate. The fact that it is Equitrade is a great plus to ending poverty. Tony Hoyle, British Chocolate Master 2004

Equitrade could, within 10 years, make poverty history in Madagascar its people could shake off the legacy of being among the poorest 10 nations on earth - by making gourmet chocolate, declared Observer Food Monthly writer Andrew Purvis upon visiting the country last year to investigate Malagasys unique and revolutionary system of production for himself.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

Madagascar Madagascar, the worlds 4th largest island, lies in the Indian Ocean. Its eight times the size of England and has a population less than that of London. It has a staggering diversity of plant and animal species, some 80% of which are found nowhere else on the planet. Besides being the home of the lemur, the island supports two thirds of the world's chameleon species.

Malagasy Refers to the native language of Madagascar and is also an adjective meaning of or relating to Madagascar, the Malagasy, or their language or culture. Please avoid using Madagascan. The correct adjective is Malagasy.

Equitrade Malagasy ensures that local produce is not only harvested in Madagascar but is processed and prepared to international requirements within the country. Our food manufacturers use the standards state-of-the-art processing equipment and all the products are sown, grown, selected and crafted into wonderful Malagasy products.

Our philosophy and practice of Equitrade is as simple and straightforward as it is revolutionary - we aim to end poverty through sustainable commercial international trade, by developing trade in finished or part-finished products from poor nations to richer nations. The added value generated in the production process must be shared equitably i.e. in such a way that the added value funds the inward investment in knowledge transfer and technology needed in the poor nation, and the development of products demanded by the richer nation. The easiest way to demonstrate the difference between Equitrade products and other products is to track where the money goes when you purchase The Equitrade way creates a multiple increase in value for the poor nation - see typical example diagrams below.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES FROM PRODUCTS THAT USE INGREDIENTS FROM POOR NATIONS THE EXISTING WAY Share of Income to Poor Nation 2-4% / Tax collected in Poor Nation 1%

WHERE THE MONEY GOES IF THE POOR NATIONS TURN THEIR INGREDIENTS INTO FINISHED PRODUCTS THE EQUITRADE WAY A multiple increase in value Share of Income to Poor Nation 20-40% / Tax Collected in Poor Nation 11%
