Discover The Origin Debuts At Food And Drink Expo

Discover the Origin

Discover the Origin is set to tempt the food and drink trade at this year’s Food and Drink Expo where it is exhibiting for the first time since the campaign’s inception. The campaign which promotes five key European products from the food and wine industry will feature at the UK’s largest Food and Drink trade show from 25-27 March at the Birmingham NEC on stand L169.

Discover the Origin was established in 2008 by the European Union campaign and designed to raise awareness around five Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) products:

  • Burgundy Wines
  • Parma Ham
  • Douro Wines
  • Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Port

Nathalie Hordonneau, coordinator for the Discover the Origin Campaign, says: “Since 2008 we have seen increasing interest, within the UK, in provenance and authenticity of food and drink and the Discover the Origin campaign has been at the forefront of this. This show is the biggest trade event in 2012 aimed at the UK’s food and drink industry and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to interact with such a large and varied audience; explaining the intricacy of our products production process and more about their provenance.”

The Discover the Origin exhibition stand is fully integrated with tasting sessions held throughout the day by fellow foodies, with Chef Rosemary Nightingale and wine expert Nathan Nolan. Rosemary will be on hand to demonstrate the finesse required to skilfully slice Parma Ham as well as the authentic way to cut Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese.  Nathan will discuss the wine regions and offer expert food and wine matching recommendations. The trade is invited to visit stand L169 to learn more about each of the products and take advantage of the expert advice on offer so as to better sell to customers.

Britain continues to relish in the ‘foodie’ revolution that has been taking hold of the nation over the past few years. Consumers are being driven by a plethora of food and cookery television programmes, social media and blogging sites to consider the importance of the provenance of their food and drink so it is essential that the trade reacts to this demand.

Notes to Editors

  • The European Union and the professional industry bodies behind this campaign are working together to raise the awareness of each specific PDO product’s origin and production process. Highlighting the qualities of excellence, tradition, natural resources and fair production these products all share through education and sampling by bringing interactive tasting sessions and seminars to the trade throughout 2012.
  • PDO is the Protected Designation of Origin. It officially guarantees the origin and quality of products with a history and tradition behind them. The PDO was created by the European Union to help consumers by informing them about the specific features of the products, and to protect their geographical appellations against imitations and usurpations.
