Rob Rees - Cotswold Celebrity Chef Visit to Australia:
Initially, as part of good corporate responsibility and social enterprise, Rob was inspired working with young people and hard to reach groups in raising self-esteem, basic skills and employability using food as a tool. His focus is on empowering people to do better by improving skills and access around food and cookery. His own charity, The Wiggly Worm Ltd, for which he is CEO, is set to deliver change for those in the world of food, education and tourism. (www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk)
The Cotswold area, just West of London, has led the way in change in Britains food culture. Whilst TV chefs have played their part, other factors such as the rise of Farmers Markets, organic production (much of which is based in the South West of England) and artisan production of cheeses, preserves, honey and other good things have made a greater contribution.
One of the best travel tips is to look closely at pub blackboards and menus. If local suppliers, makers and regional specialty foods are listed, its a good indication that the kitchen is taking care and pride in what is being served.
In the Cotswolds look out for the local lamb and venison, Bibury trout, Single and Double Gloucester cheeses, local ales and fresh herbs. Chef Rob Rees has been at the forefront of raising awareness of quality food in the Cotswolds area, from suppliers to chefs. A regular on TV and national radio, his message is all about fun and the joys of placing food and cooking at the heart of family life. Media work and public demonstrations have seen Rees cook for a range of people, from Her Majesty the Queen to children in a Tokyo school.
In January 2006, Rob was awarded an MBE for Services to the Food Industry. Ron will be visiting Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney between 7th September and 13th September.
