Bookers Vineyard Celebrates Winning Wines

Bolney Wine Estate

The corks are popping at Bookers Vineyard in Bolney, West Sussex following a raft of wins at the industrys most prestigious wine awards ceremonies.

Bookers walked away with two Commendations at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards, for its 2005 Foxhole Reserve and 2007 Pinot Noir the only two English red wines to receive awards from the judging panel.

Bookers scooped Bronze at the 2008 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) for its 2007 Pinot Noir (again, the only English red wine to pick up an award) and for its 2004 Barts Bubbly ros sparkling wine.

Bookers 2007 Autumn Spice white wine was Highly Commended by the judges at the annual International Wine Challenge (IWC).

Bookers is also the toast of Sussex following the results of the South East Vineyards Association Awards. It won Silver for its 2007 Autumn Leaves white wine, Bronze for its 2006 Dark Harvest and 2006 Pinot Noir red wines, and its 2007 Bolney Blush ros wine was Highly Commended.

Samantha Linter, winemaker and director at Bookers Vineyard says, These winning results show that changes are afoot in terms of quality and demand for English wine. What started as a garden gate business for us has now become of interest to the major supermarkets, revealing confidence in the long-term future of English wine. We currently produce 50,000 bottles annually, with a plan to double production to meet rising demand. Our customers are willing to pay a little more for premium products that havent been produced to the detriment of the environment. Shoppers are now actively seeking out home grown wines that compete with mainstream brands in terms of taste and quality but havent amassed hundreds of food miles.

The awards are announced in the run up to English Wine Week (24th May-1st June 2008), an annual countrywide campaign to promote English wines and vineyards, which has been instrumental in encouraging consumers to think and drink English.
