For those seeking a classic Rioja, Hacienda el Ternero Crianza `Torno`Rioja is a fantastic dry, medium-bodied Spanish fruity red Rioja, made using 100% Tempranillo grapes. Classified as Crianza, it is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels before resting in bottle.  On the nose it is perfumed with violets and cherries. The palate is fresh and structured with notes of black fruits with spices and hints of caramel from the oak influence on the finish.  Hacienda el Ternero Crianza `Torno`Rioja is delightful paired with salami, chorizo and mature hard cheeses.  It's name `Torno` stems from the old Monastery; the monks would place food and clothing onto the base of a rotating door which they would turn `torno` so that the people outside could get to them without looking out.  Available from wickhamwine.co.uk priced at £14.99, ABV: 13.5%.

In contrast, de Alto Tradicional 2020 is a modern fruity Rioja, made using equal quantities of Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes picked in early October and grown in vineyards around Azagra in Rioja Baja on clay-limestone soil.  A contemporary Rioja, 30 percent of the wine has spent six months in French and American oak.  It has hints of spice and red fruits on the nose and is beautifully balanced, offering layers of red berry fruits on the palate laced with vanilla and hints of mocha and liquorice.  Priced at £8.99 during Rioja Wine Month, ABV: 13.5% and available from wickhamwine.co.uk.
