Efendy is a restaurant like no other. Based upon a contemporary concept of traditional Turkish cuisine, the restaurant serves dishes which entice the tastebuds of all food lovers. The concept was designed by restaurateur Somer Sivrioglu who, after many successful years in the hospitality industry, has followed his dream to create a modern Turkish concept unique to Australian dining.
The restaurants name perfectly describes its cuisine. Efendy, meaning gentleman in old Turkish, is a common description for people with traditional upbringings who adopt modern views. Thus the cuisine at Efendy is a modern twist on traditional Turkish recipes which have evolved over the last five centuries.
This modern twist is also reflected in the interior design. The dcor is a blend of classical and contemporary design, incorporating modern Turkish art, Jorge Pensi chairs and Louis Poulsen light fittings. Complete with a stunning outdoor courtyard, a separate cocktail bar and several private rooms, the restaurant is the ideal place for corporate and private functions as well as sharing small plates with friends.
Head chef Christien Darvall brings extensive fine dining experience from Australia, London and the South of France. He recently received various accolades and awards for his take on Modern Mediterranean fare at Balmain restaurant Kazbah on Darling. His Mediterranean culinary skills have been internationally recognised, particularly at the Gourmet Summit in Dubai and in Shanghai.
The menu consists of an array of cold and hot meze plates designed to share, as well as signature mains and desserts. Some of these signature dishes include the lamb shank slow cooked in pomegranate and saffron, chickpea and barley pilaf and the chargrilled swordfish fillet, served with fire roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Not to be missed on the menu is the Chocolate baklava with salep ice-cream and port spiked sour cherries.
Mezes, which are small appetisers, are also offered and the meze journeys for two are a particular highlight at Efendy. Inspired by the meyhanes, local eateries/pubs, of Istanbul, six different varieties are designed daily to recreate a journey to one of the worlds boldest and most vibrant capitals.
The venue is situated on the Balmain peninsula midway between Balmain and Rozelle and is a short drive from the CBD. With a variety of options, Efendy is the ideal venue to dine with friends or colleagues.
Efendy is located at 79 Elliott St, Balmain.
