With Coca-Cola and Pepsi investing millions promoting their new "enhanced waters", a leading French laboratory has put them to the test.
They analysed the antioxidant levels, comparing those with synthetic vitamins (V Water and Vitaminwater) with those containing only natural ingredients (Firefly water and "this water").
Firefly's all-natural Redbush & Acerola water came top by a wide margin, with nearly twice the antioxidants of Vitaminwater, and 9 times the antioxidants of V Water.
With Pepsi and Coca-Cola recently entering the fast-growing enhanced water market, Londoners are being overwhelmed with new improved waters offering multi-vits or superfruits.
So, to put these to the test, a French laboratory has measured the overall antioxidant levels of each of the leading enhanced water drinks. [Antioxidants include Vitamin C, Carotene and the polyphenols in red fruits and teas, and have been shown to have a wide array of health benefits [Ref. 1,2,3,4].]
An independent French laboratory carried out the tests, using the ORAC method. They compared Firefly Water with the highest-antioxidant variant from each range: V Water (Pepsico) with pomegranates & blueberries & vitamin C; this water (innocent) with Pomegranates, Lychees & Blackcurrants; Vitaminwater (Coca-Cola) Power C.
Firefly Waters Redbush & Acerola drink had nearly twice the antioxidant capacity of "Vitaminwater", 5 times the antioxidants of "This water", and 9 times as much as "V Water".
Harry Briggs, co-founder of Firefly, was delighted with the results: What makes the findings truly remarkable is that Firefly Water achieves these high antioxidant levels even though we use only 100% natural ingredients like Redbush tea, Green Tea, Acerola whereas rivals like Vitamin water and V Water are using synthetic vitamins, which are supposed to be more resilient. Its great that natural ingredients have the edge.
Firefly Water is also the only drink among its leading peers to be sweetened with organic agave nectar a low-GI nectar pressed from Mexican cactus. The competitors all contain either sugar or fructose.
Firefly are currently sourcing more natural antioxidants for a further Firefly Water variant, to be launched in September.
Firefly Water is available in Waitrose, Fresh & Wild, Wholefoods Market, Coffee Republic, with RRP 1.39
