Crown Perth

Construction is underway on Crown Perth's newest venue a premium wine bar celebrating Western Australia's rich wine heritage and exceptional vintages.

The wine bar will be named as a tribute to Dr. John Gladstones AO, whose pioneering research identified Margaret River's potential as one of the world's great wine-producing regions.

Located between Crown Towers and Crown Metropol, 'Gladstones' will be an intimate and luxurious space for hotel guests, visitors and theatregoers, seating around 50 people. New concept images released today showcase the warm design and sophisticated setting, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine before a show or sharing a bottle with friends.

The carefully selected wine list will highlight Western Australia's award-winning producers alongside a selection of globally acclaimed wines, offering something for every palate. Guests will also have the unique opportunity to treat themselves to a curated list of premium quality drops and exclusive vintages by the glass, making Gladstones the ultimate destination for wine lovers and casual visitors alike.

Crown Perth CEO Brian Pereira said the venue is both a fitting nod to the past, while celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of the state's wine culture today.

“Gladstones will offer a truly exceptional experience for our guests, showcasing the best wines Western Australia and the world have to offer – while still being accessible to anyone celebrating a night out or a special occasion at Crown.”

Dr. Gladstones' daughter, Helen Gladstones, said the family is proud of their father's legacy and to see his influence recognised.

“It's lovely to see Crown recognising what he did - not loudly and not with fanfare - but with quiet conviction.”

“That seed he planted changed the future of wine growing in our state, laying the groundwork for something much bigger than himself. I know he'd be quietly delighted to see how far it's come.”

Gladstones joins the recently announced Urban Food District as part of Crown Perth's largest investment in nearly a decade, redefining the precinct's food, wine and entertainment offerings.

Dr John Gladstones AO

Born in Guildford, Western Australia in 1932, John Gladstones was an internationally renowned agricultural scientist and agronomist who played a pivotal role in shaping the Western Australian wine industry.

While working for the University of Western Australia's Department of Agriculture in the mid-1960s, Gladstones challenged prevailing assumptions that the Margaret River region was too moist for quality grape production. In two papers (1965 and 1966), Gladstones set out his conclusions that the area's climate and soil were similar to the famous Bordeaux region in France.

This work inspired local landowners to consider viticulture as a new agricultural direction for the southwest of WA and started the transformation of Margaret River into one of Australia's most respected wine-producing regions.
