25 Years On: Accor Celebrates the Lasting Legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Accor

This week marks 25 years since Sydney proudly hosted the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games - a defining moment that transformed Sydney Olympic Park into a world-class sporting, entertainment and cultural precinct.

Built to accommodate athletes, officials and spectators, Novotel Sydney Olympic Park and ibis Sydney Olympic Park were at the heart of the action in 2000 and have since become enduring symbols of the precinct's legacy of world-class hospitality.

Since the Games, Accor Stadium has welcomed more than 35 million visitors, from international athletes to global superstars.

On Monday 15 September, Accor Stadium - Australia's premier major events venue - unveiled the inaugural inductees to its Hall of Fame, honouring eleven athletes across multiple sporting codes, with legends such as Ian Thorpe and Cathy Freeman in attendance.

Today, Sydney Olympic Park has evolved into one of Sydney's premier destinations for sport, entertainment and culture, with Accor's Sydney Olympic Park hotels providing essential accommodation and warm hospitality at the centre of the action.

Adrian Williams, Chief Operating Officer for Accor in the Pacific region, said: “As Sydney reflects on the 25 year legacy of the Games, Novotel and ibis Sydney Olympic Park remain more than hotels - they are living landmarks of a moment when Sydney captured the world's attention. Together with the Pullman and ibis budget, our hotels continue to welcome hundreds of thousands of guests each year, keeping the spirit of Sydney 2000 well and truly alive.”

Accor's hotels at Sydney Olympic Park include:

  • Novotel Sydney Olympic Park – opened in 2000 with 177 rooms, hosting international guests, athletes' families and dignitaries during the Games.
  • ibis Sydney Olympic Park – opened shortly after with 150 rooms, delivering accessible and affordable stays just steps away from the stadium.
  • Pullman Sydney Olympic Park – joined the precinct in 2008, adding a 218 premium guestrooms to Accor's Sydney Olympic Park offering.
  • ibis budget Sydney Olympic Park – joined in 2008, offering 156 comfortable and affordable rooms just steps from Accor Stadium and Sydney Olympic Park's attractions.

Kerrie Mather, Chief Executive Officer of Venues NSW and Accor Stadium, said: "Accor Stadium has been home to Australia's greatest sporting moments and the inaugural Hall of Fame was a fitting way to celebrate the people, athletes and fans that make our Olympic Stadium so special. From the Olympic and Paralympic Games 25 years ago, world-class concerts and epic sporting contests, Accor Stadium has seen it all. This is just the beginning with many more unforgettable moments to come."

From blockbuster concerts at Accor Stadium featuring Taylor Swift and Coldplay, to international sporting clashes like the record-breaking British & Irish Lions tour, as well as major conferences and community events, these hotels remain at the heart of Sydney's world-class entertainment and sporting scene.
