Shropshire-based Royal Warrant ham producer DukesHill was featured on ITV1's James Martin's Saturday Morning series this Saturday 18th May as host James Martin demonstrated his twist on a classic ham and cheese toastie by using DukesHill's Wiltshire ham paired with a bechamel sauce.
James hollowed out a sourdough loaf and layered inside with DukesHill's premium succulent ham, a rich bechamel sauce and fresh tomatoes before baking the loaf for 40 minutes. The result is a melty, oozy picnic loaf that can be eaten straight away or would be perfect served for guests for an al fresco lunch. Viewers shared their enthusiasm for the recipe on social media by calling the toastie “another level!” and “very impressive”.

Recipe - James Martin's Ham & Cheese Toastie
Ingredients
1 sourdough loaf, hollowed out
12 slices of DukesHill thick cut Wiltshire ham
4 tomatoes, sliced
Sauce
½ onion
3 cloves
1 bay leaf
100g butter
50g plain flour
500ml full fat milk
400g cheddar cheese, grated
Method
- Preheat the oven to 170c.
- Warm the onion, cloves, bay leaf and milk. Then, heat the butter and add the flour. Follow by adding the milk, whisking constantly. Finish by adding the cheese and season.
- To assemble, layer up the bread with cheese, tomatoes and ham. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or serve immediately without baking.
