EDITOR'S NOTES
About Salcombe Distilling Co. (SDCo.)
Inspired by the coastal vitality of Salcombe and its shipbuilding heritage, Salcombe Distilling Co. creates an exceptional collection of Salcombe Gin, New London Light non-alcoholic spirits & aperitifs, and Salcombe Rum at its waterside distillery on Island Street, Salcombe. It is one of the world's only distilleries directly accessible by boat.
Salcombe Distilling Co. has been awarded a plethora of international and regional awards since launching Salcombe Gin in 2016. For every 50cl and 70cl bottle of New London Light and Salcombe Gin sold in the UK, SDCo. donates 1% of the revenue to the Marine Conservation Society's ocean recovery projects.
The spirits are distilled in 'Provident', a 450-litre bespoke copper pot still which stands proudly behind glass doors at the waterside distillery in Salcombe. Drawing influence from the famous 19th century Salcombe fruit schooners and their precious cargo, Salcombe Distilling Co. uses only the finest fresh citrus fruits and spices to create its range of multi-award winning products.
A unique, highly valuable luxury brand which others aspire to, Salcombe Distilling Co. is a leader in the hyper premium gin sector with the exclusive Voyager Series, part of its portfolio of internationally award-winning gins. These sit alongside the multi-award winning signature gins 'Start Point' and 'Rosé Sainte Marie'.
Salcombe Gin 'Start Point'
A multi-award winning, classic, citrus-led London Dry gin that is exceptionally smooth and complex. Extremely versatile, it has a backbone of Macedonian juniper with a flavour profile inspired by Salcombe's rich maritime heritage. Salcombe Gin's flagship, it's distilled using the London Dry method and features a blend of 13 fine botanicals with citrus flavours encompassing grapefruit, lemon and lime peels alongside English coriander seed, juniper and orris root. It is incredibly balanced and distinct with layers of intricacy running throughout.
RRP £35 for a 50cl bottle, RRP £45 for a 70cl bottle, 44% ABV.
Salcombe Gin 'Rosé Sainte Marie'
Inspired by the Mediterranean coast, it's bright, fresh and elegant. The delicate fresh flavours are reminiscent of Southern France and in turn, emulate qualities of a dry rosé wine. It is purposefully dry and has no added sugar, artificial colours or flavours. The gin pays homage to the Sainte Marie lighthouse in the South of France, which marks where 19th century Salcombe Fruit Schooners loaded supplies of citrus fruits and herbs. Distilled with Macedonian juniper berries and teamed with flavours of angelica and strawberries (that give a subtle sweetness), an additional 12 hand-sourced botanicals including orange blossom, rose petals, fresh lemon, orange peel and pink peppercorns are then added to the distillation.
RRP £35 for a 50cl bottle, RRP £45 for a 70cl bottle, 41.4% ABV.
Salcombe Gin Voyager Series 'Daring'
Developed in collaboration with world-renowned Michelin-starred chef Paul Ainsworth and inspired by his dish, 'A Tale of Porthilly'. Distilled with whey and foraged Cornish botanicals, this exquisite gin showcases the spirit of the wild Cornish coast and mimics the rich, smooth mouthfeel and fresh umami and zinc-like properties of the Cornish oyster. Taking further inspiration from Paul's carefully balanced dish, the gin combines the use of fennel, apple and lime to replicate the accompanying salad and create a complex flavour profile and exciting taste.
RRP £75 for a 50cl bottle, 46% ABV.
Salcombe Gin School
Join Salcombe Gin School for the day to learn the art of distillation. Take charge of a mini copper pot still to develop and distil your own 70cl bottle of gin. During the day, you'll discover how Salcombe Gin is produced and what it takes to ensure your flavours are balanced and harmonious. Of course, you'll also be sipping on a 'Salcombe & Tonic' while you're crafting your unique spirit.
Experiment with different gin styles with a huge range of citrus, herbal, floral and spice botanicals – or you can even bring your own. Expert distillers will be on hand to guide you through the process and help you choose when to make the all-important cuts during the distillation process.
Once you've picked a name and your gin is ready, you'll bottle, box and label it, before heading to the waterside bar to enjoy your creation with a choice of garnishes and tonics to complement your recipe. Typically, Salcombe Gin School sessions run on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons at 2pm and Saturday mornings at 10am. Find out full availability and book your spot online. Sessions are £110 for one person, or £160 for two to share.
