The Corner House in Canterbury is now bigger and better thanks to a beautiful new dining space created in the restaurant's sunny garden.
Chef owner Matt Sworder opened The Corner House Canterbury, his second restaurant, in 2017. He worked at some of London's top restaurants, including Bistro Union under Adam Byatt and Les Deux Salons with Anthony Demetre before opening his first restaurant in Minster in 2013.
Matt's recipe for success has always been to cook quality locally sourced, seasonal ingredients simply but well and The Corner House Canterbury's menu will continue to celebrate the very best of Kent. Suppliers include the Butcher of Brogdale, Biddenden Vineyard, Gadd's Brewery, Dumbrells, Kentish Oils, Mr Spanton, Page & Sons and Stour Valley Game.
The signature sharing dishes will permanently feature on the menu and bar snacks will be available at lunch and dinner. Throughout the summer months, diners can also enjoy a sharing BBQ plate which includes: flat iron steaks, venison sausages, BBQ mayo, chicken kebabs and proper slaw with a garlic and shallot confit spooned onto the steaks for extra flavour. BBQs will be held on weekends throughput the year - follow @cornerhouserestaurantskent for details.
The new building will seat up to 26 guests with bi-fold doors opening up onto the garden, providing a welcome sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Outside seating will also be available for those looking for al fresco drinks and snacks.
In addition to the two dining rooms, the Corner House Canterbury has five beautifully designed guest rooms, offering the perfect destination for couples looking for a cultured city break with some of the best food that Kent can offer. The rooms are inclusive of a continental breakfast tray including homemade granola, yoghurt and homemade berry compote, fresh fruit, fresh milk and orange juice.
Matt took the decision to close his first restaurant in Minster last month, moving his team to work in the Canterbury restaurant. The extension brings the restaurant up to 80 covers, providing space for larger celebrations and events. Relocating staff to a single venue allows for a seven-day operation and all day trading with drinks served from 10am and food served from midday to 9pm.
Matt stated, “It was of course disappointing to close my first restaurant site but the extension at Canterbury heralds a new era for The Corner House. Its location brings so many exciting opportunities and enables us to grow the business strategically during a challenging period for hospitality. The new Canterbury restaurant is a beautiful space that gives the sense of bringing the outdoors in. I'm absolutely delighted with the design and can't wait to welcome our wonderful guests.”
The Corner House Canterbury extension was designed by Del Renzio HQ, the Ramsgate architects were also behind the design of The Corner House Minster and the original Canterbury restaurant building. The interior was designed by Lifeforms Design and the builders were JW Culver.
