'The Most Civilised Restaurant in London'

Bellamy

Bellamy's, the classic Franco-Belgian brasserie on Bruton Place in Mayfair, is one of London's most enduring and loved restaurants. Now in its seventeenth year, Bellamy's – described by Tatler as 'the most civilised restaurant in London' – happily reopened in May, after almost twelve months of near-continuous closure due to lockdown.

Founded in 2004 by Gavin Rankin, former managing director of the Birley Clubs, the appeal of Bellamy's lies in its 'inclusive exclusivity', offering all the elegance, discretion and attention to personal service of a private members' club – it is even named after the club in Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour trilogy – without the need for membership.

'The club without a sub' has, perhaps uniquely among London restaurants, retained the same patron, chef, restaurant manager and assistant restaurant manager since its first day. The oyster bar manager, a relative newcomer, has been at Bellamy's a mere twelve years. The familiarity and continuity this longevity engenders explains why many of Bellamy's regular customers eat at the restaurant at least weekly, and in some cases daily.

Chef Stéphane Pacoud's menu changes seasonally, but always includes a number of Bellamy's dishes which, by popular demand, remain unchanged. Among these are Smoked Eel Mousse and Salad of Artichoke Heart & Haricots Verts. The Iced Lobster Soufflé was named by National Geographic Traveller Food Magazine as one of 'The Eight Best Shellfish Dishes In The World'.

Main courses of Fillets Of Dover Sole, Oil & Lemon, Pommes Vapeur and Sliced Entrecôte Of Baynards Park Beef, Pommes Frites are always on the A la Carte menu, as are Marina's Chocolate Cake – made by Gavin's mother, the eponymous Marina – and Île Flottante. Exemplary cheeses are also a feature.

A weekly Table d'Hôte menu offering two courses at £25 or three courses at £29.50 appeals, says Gavin Rankin, “both to the cautious young and to the prudent mature who, as in all the best parties, are happily united at Bellamy's.”

A highlight of dining at Bellamy's is the restaurant's all-French wine list, ranging from the excellent La Combe de Château Grinou house wines at £28 to Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 2018 Domaine Joseph Drouhin (£250) and Château Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru 1989 (£995) - and all points in between. The keen pricing of the list invites exploration of such great wines as Chassagne-Montrachet, Crozes-Hermitage and Château Chasse Spleen. A Réserve du Patron selection of exceptional bottles in small quantities is also included.

Eight champagnes, including Ayala Brut and Rosé Majeur, Bollinger Grande Cuvée, Ruinart and Dom Perignon 2009 are offered by the bottle, and five by the glass. Vins de Dessert include Côteaux du Layon Atomes Crochus; Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise; Klein Constantia Vin De Constance; and the exceptional Château d'Yquem 1er Cru Supérieur 2006 Sauternes.

In addition to the restaurant, by day Bellamy's has a lunchtime Oyster Bar, which alongside perfect oysters, offers a selection of open sandwiches, shellfish cocktails, rarebits and light dishes suited to any time of day such as Sashimi of Tuna and Cold Poached Salmon with Sauce Verte. By night, it becomes a Cocktail Bar serving classic cocktails – including Martinis ranked by both prestigious restaurant guide Hot Dinners and the Evening Standard newspaper as being among the best in London – and wines by the glass.

Beloved of critics and customers alike, Bellamy's – “one of London's more eccentric restaurants” – eschews trends and instead focuses on quietly, confidently and impeccably delivering the best in food, wine and service from a staff of unmatched dedication. Whether visiting for their first time or the fiftieth, guests will find in Bellamy's a moment unlike any other.
