Mercia Whisky Marks First Anniversary With Launch of Its New Make Rye Spirit

Mercia Whisky is celebrating its first anniversary by unveiling its very first rye spirit at this week's English Whisky Festival.

The exclusive small batch two-month-old rye, which has been aged in a 50 litre Speyside cask, is the Staffordshire company's first product.

It will feature on the second day of the two-day online festival - now in its second year – which starts on Friday September 3rd at 6pm and runs until 10.45pm on Saturday September 4th.

It is a significant moment for Mercia Whisky founders Jeremy Roney and Paul Horrocks, who founded the spirit producer in September 2020 and have spent the last year establishing the business, attracting investors and developing its first products, while also maintaining full-time working roles.

Mercia Whisky is one of five new producers taking part in the festival, which also features 11 new products.

“Launching our very first rye spirit to an audience that appreciates its whisky is something we could not have envisaged a year ago,” said Roney.

“We can't wait to talk about the product and our plans to establish Mercia Whisky in the Midlands as a producer of quality rye whisky in the coming years.”

Horrocks added: “We share a strong passion for whisky and we launched Mercia Whisky because of that. For us, this is just the start.”

The English Whisky Festival has six online tasting sessions over the two days with Mercia Whisky featuring in session five 'Heart & Graft'.

The rye new make will be available to buy after the festival and costs £75, excluding delivery.

Tasting notes

Mercia Whisky two-month new make rye spirit (ABV 50%) has been aged in a 50 litre Speyside cask, which has been shaved, toasted and recharred.

  • Appearance: An alluring rich caramel.
  • Nose: sweet roasted nuts, buttered toast, warm rye bread.
  • Palate: Initial burst of sweet brown sugar and honey, with intense rich roasted nuts and a lingering coffee liqueur finish.
  • Serve neat or with ice
