When Australian Survivor contestant, Baden Cooke, was voted out at Monday night's Tribal Council, he clocked up two surprises; first, instead of being ousted from the game, he was exiled at "Redemption Rock" and second, that the location of his exile was an extraordinarily beautiful lagoon, fully revealed in last night's Survivor episode.
Keen eyed Outback Queensland travellers will note that "Redemption Rock" is commonly known as Fountain Springs, a permanent waterhole located at the base of a rocky crevasse on a private cattle station halfway between Mt Isa and Cloncurry.
Aussie movie buffs will also recognise "Redemption Rock" as the location where Sue Charlton, the love interest of Mick Dundee was almost taken by a giant saltie in the original blockbuster movie, Croc Dundee. The show-stopping scene happened when Sue bent down at the Spring's edge to replenish her drinking water while wearing an eye-popping skimpy swimsuit.
Fountain Springs can be accessed via the 23 km Ballara Mining Heritage Trail that starts on the south side of the Overlanders Way, about 60km from Cloncurry. The trail journeys through spinifex landscapes and rocky outcrops millions of years in the making and travels past the site of three former townships that are remnants of a boom-and-bust story of the mining industry. The reward at the end of the trail is a refreshing dip in Fountain Springs.
