Mainbrace Rum wins 2 gold awards at the  Rum & Cachaça Masters, 2021

(In the 'Gold Rum – Super Premium' and 'Gold Rum – Overproof' categories)

Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum (40% ABV) was conceived in July 2018 at the Ferryboat Inn, Cornwall, and was launched in October 2019, at RumFest in London.

On 31st July 2020 Mainbrace Navy Strength Rum (54.5% ABV) was launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Black Tot Day (On 31st July 1970 the Royal Navy had abolished the much-loved daily rum tot, served for 325 years to generations of naval ratings).

In March this year, Mainbrace Rum picked up two gold awards at the prestigious Rum & Cachaça Masters 2021 competition.

Chaired by The Spirits Business and a panel of leading spirits specialists, The Rum & Cachaça Masters competition is a drive to reward the finest rum and cachaça brands on the world stage. This year, the competition was extremely well-represented with 154 entries from a total of 58 different brands. Nevertheless, Mainbrace stood out amongst the judges, who commented on the notes of “sponge cake and dark chocolate” and complimented the sweetness and slight dryness of the Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum's blend. In the case of Mainbrace Navy Strength Rum, the judges commended its distinctive “elegant nose”, “bold and silky palate” and “nice vanilla sweetness with some dryness from the wood”.

Richard Haigh, Co-Founder of Mainbrace Rum, commented:

“We're really overwhelmed by the positive feedback and looking forward to developing the brand further over the next year.”

About Mainbrace

Mainbrace is a premium golden rum, conceived in Falmouth, Cornwall, blended from two distinct rum styles - English Navy Rum from Guyana and French Agricole Rhum from Martinique.

As a smooth drink, with no additional sweeteners or colorings, Mainbrace Rum has received rave reviews and multiple global awards since its launch at RumFest in 2019.

The brand name comes from the naval term to "splice the mainbrace". In the days of sail the main mast was steadied, or braced, with a thick rope called the mainbrace. If it was cut by enemy fire in battle a team of naval ratings (sailors) had to splice the rope back together under enemy fire to save the ship and win the battle. As a reward for successfully achieving this herculean task the captain would order the ship's pusser (purser) to issue a double ration of rum to the team of ratings as a toast to victory.

To 'splice the mainbrace' inevitably became a naval euphemism for an important celebration and was always accompanied with the toast 'The King – God Bless Him' or 'The Queen – God Bless Her'.

Mainbrace Rum therefore embodies the spirit of celebrating a hard-won victory or a major success or celebration.

Drinking Mainbrace Rum

When tasting Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum, the nose is initially dominated with notes of dried fruits and toffee. Over time, it offers notes of sweet apple and spices. The pallet starts with grassy notes that quickly give way to caramel and toffee nuances. The finish is long and smooth with a subtle warming spiciness, making it an extremely well-balanced rum.

Mainbrace Navy Strength Rum is consistent with the Royal Navy Standard of 54.5%. This was the lowest alcohol content that would still allow gunpowder to light if it were soaked in the rum. The term “proof” comes from testing whether the rum was of a high enough ABV to light the wet gunpowder.

The nose begins with sweet woody aromas that eventually subside to dried fruits and caramel. The palate has an initial peppery spice that quickly become naturally sweet treacle notes with a hint of spiced vanilla.

Mainbrace Rum can be enjoyed both on its own or with a mixer (Ginger Ale or Tonic Water are recommended!) or in cocktails, a selection of which can be found on the website. (https://www.mainbracerum.com)

Guyana and Martinique

The Mainbrace blend starts with traditional Demerara Rum from Guyana, made from Molasses produced from sugar cane, grown on the banks of the Demerara river since  the 17th century.

It is produced using the same methods and stills that have produced rum for the British Navy since 1732. We believe our rum speaks for itself, which is why there are no added sweeteners or colorings.

Mainbrace includes rum from 3 historic Guyanan stills, each aged for up to 5 years, and each bringing natural sweetness and a unique character to the blend.

  • The first part of the blend is from a double wooden pot still in Port Mourant, which has been making rum for the Royal Navy since the 19th
  • The second part is from the wooden Coffey still, which was originally found at the Enmore Sugar Estate. This is the last still of its kind in the world.
  • The third part comes from an original four column French Savalle still, dating back to the 18th

The Agricole Rhum used in the Mainbrace blend comes from La Favorite Distillery in Martinique, which was established in 1842 and is well-known for punchy Agricole Rhum even at low ABVs.

The initial earthy textures experienced when sipping Mainbrace Rum can be attributed to the Agricole Rhum. The distillery is powered on a closed loop system that uses the excess fibres (bagasse) of sugar cane to fuel its furnaces. These then create the steam to distil the Rhum. In fact, the last distillery in Martinique still working purely from steam.
