Easy José

Easy José have launched a limited edition coffee (£10.50 for 250g) produced by the Mayni indigenous community leader, Dalia Casancho. The special coffee celebrates an indigenous community of women based in the Peruvian rainforest, who are committed to tackling the destruction of the Amazon. The award-winning coffee bursts with notes of honey, stone fruit and white grape.

Dalia Casancho is an inspiring woman and a key member of the Mayni community. As well as growing and foraging plants and herbs that act as natural remedies, Dalia is a coffee leader who harvests and produces her own micro-lots.

The coffee has been milled and dried with the sticky, sugary juice from the coffee cherry, giving the coffee a fantastically sweet and complex cup. The coffee is turned multiple times a day and although intricate to manage, the results are incredible and worth the effort.

Easy José has worked with the Mayni and neighbouring communities for several years to help protect the forest from slash and burn, and allow the people to earn a decent income from the land in a sustainable way. With the support of Easy José and conservation groups, the Mayni can continue to live their traditional way of life while enjoying the commercial success from the coffee. All of Easy José's coffee comes from the Mayni.

Sustainable Farming Techniques

Different to the way farmers traditionally cultivate coffee today, which is destructive to the natural landscape due to the removal of virgin forest which destroys bio-diversity, the Mayni community have pioneered an alternative coffee growing method, growing their coffee beneath the forest canopy, protecting the largest part of its natural biodiversity.

Due to the steep landscape in the region, the community must undertake all processing by hand - every coffee cherry is hand picked and the cherries are processed by the community themselves, using the impressive wet mill and infrastructure built with the help of the Peruvian government.

Biodegradable Packaging

The Mayni Indigenous and Dalia Casancho coffee bags are packaged with True Bio. These True Bio Bags were the first of their kind in Europe and are made from 100% fully biodegradable materials. In the right circumstances these bags will biodegrade within 90 days. The outer layer is unbleached Kraft paper and the interior layer is made from wood pulp and a fine bio barrier designed to maintain product freshness. The one way emits CO2 from freshly roasted coffee, enhancing the final taste. A bioplastic zipper retains freshness after opening.

Easy José Coffee is available as singular bags or on a subscription basis. Prices of the Dalia Casancho Coffee starts at £10.50 for 250g. Easy José Coffee can be purchased directly from their website: www.easyjosecoffee.co.uk

Quotes

Co-Founders James Higgs, Greg Campher and Jamie Brice, share their thoughts on the Easy José mission;

“Working closely with remote indigenous communities, our mission is to help them grow incredible specialty coffee in harmony with the forests they live in. Rainforest protection and defending against its destruction is a project we can all get behind.”

“The Amazon is being destroyed at the fastest rate in 10 years, and the coffee industry is contributing to this destruction. Growing levels of demand coupled with the ever increasing need for profitability has led to mass deforestation. This demolition is impacting everyone in our world. It's time to realise we can change this.”

“A very human story and one very much of our time. There exists an incredible opportunity to work with the people who can truly make a difference in the fight against deforestation.”

Notes to editors

  • The Easy José Coffee brand was originally founded in 2010 by Jose Melim, the South West's Barista Champion and secured a significant wholesale customer base across the U.K., mainly of independent farm shops, deli's and cafes, all of whom had a focus on quality.

  • In 2018, partners James Higgs, Greg Campher and Jamie Brice joined the Easy José team. The trio share the same values and dedication towards the brand since it started. For them, the transparency of the Easy José story is and always will be at the forefront of the brand.

  • Easy José have continued a pay increase for the Mayni community (13% RTI), and Mayni were the 4th best paid community in Peru during 2019-2020.

  • Every year since 2016 (excluding 2020 because of Covid) a member of Easy José has travelled to visit the Mayni. Working with the key coffee individuals in the community and experts from the Peruvian forestry commission, they collectively share and learn about advanced agronomy techniques and processing methods that will improve yield and cup quality. By working directly and consistently with the community in this way, Easy José have seen incredible improvements year on year.

  • The Easy José medium term goal is to work closely with numerous indigenous communities and forested countries across the globe, helping to implement the same coffee growing programs they have proven in Peru. Their mission is to slow down deforestation and mitigate the effects of global warming, leaving a legacy for our children, as well as the indigenous people who will help achieve this goal.

  • Easy José have over 100 wholesale partners, including: Giffords Circus, Wild Food Cafe, London Mother Works, London Bristol Lido, etc. A full stockist list is available upon request.
