OGGS® founder Hannah Carter has been awarded the top accolade, “Start-up Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2020.

OGGS® mission is to replace the hidden animal products in our food chain; the ones we don't even realise are there, like the egg white in bread and the poor welfare barn eggs in cheap cakes; they've started with eggs. OGGS® has launched the UK's first liquid egg alternative, easy and convenient not only for consumers but for foodservice and manufacturing. For every one tonne of OGGS® Egg Alternative Aquafaba used vs. eggs, 28 tonnes of CO2 is saved. OGGS® also offer tasty plant-based cakes and treats that taste as good as a normal cake so everyone can snack without compromise.

In an excited statement from Hannah Carter, she says “As a mission-driven company, we measure our business in things that matter, like CO2 reduction, chickens saved, and jobs created because quite simply, this was the motivation for starting the company. These are the things that will reflect our success and why we are so delighted that OGGS® has been recognised not just for our achievements but also our commitment to a better future for people, planet, and animals.”

Since its launch, OGGS® has given 87,717 chickens the week off, saved 506,056 eggs from commercial use and used 821,073 pieces of 100% recycled plastic in its packaging that can also be recycled. Not to mention that OGGS® has also planted 2,500 trees. What's more, for every kilogram of eggs replaced by OGGS® Egg Alternative Aquafaba, OGGS® saves enough CO2 to boil a kettle 21 times.

Now in its eighth year, the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in partnership with Starling Bank celebrate the hard work and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs in the UK, rather than the business' balance sheet. This year saw the awards ceremony take on a virtual approach and the OGGS®team tuned in to watch the evening unfold dressed in their finery with a glass of fizz in hand.

The Entrepreneur of the Year category recognises the immense pressure associated with the early years of business and the time and effort it takes to get an idea off the ground, and celebrates those who have overcome every hurdle to build something new and exciting whilst taking planetary effect into consideration.

With Covid-19 restrictions preventing the finals taking place at a live event, Hannah won the award during a virtual award ceremony and was joined by finalists across every region who also virtually attended September's Great British Entrepreneur Awards at which Hannah won Start Up Entrepreneur of the Year also.

In a video message to finalists at the September event, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “Entrepreneurs [have shown they] stay strong, even during a global pandemic. Coronavirus hasn't stifled enterprise.

“Entrepreneurs are creating new businesses and adapting to the crisis, as seen in this year's entries. And that's what we need to happen if we want our economy to bounce back. We need all of you to keep inventing, keep taking risks, keep creating new businesses.

“It's my job as Chancellor to celebrate, champion and support you.

“Congratulations to all the winners. Thank you to all of you for everything you've done.”

Francesca James, founder of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, said: “Hannah has a wonderful entrepreneurial story and I'm delighted for her to win this award. I'll be keeping a very close eye on what she does in the years to come and look forward to welcoming her to the community.”

Anne Boden, founder and CEO of Starling Bank, said: “We're entrepreneurs and we have spirit. We fight back and we're very good at dealing with adversity. And Hannah is an example to us all, of entrepreneurs that are creative, innovative, and changing the world.

“I'm so excited that Starling, a business I founded in 2014 and now the Best British Bank, is sponsoring such an important Awards. And as one entrepreneur to another, congratulations to getting where you are this evening and best of luck for the future.”
