Prominent writer, mentor and coach, Susie Pearl, has learnt a great deal from some of the most creative people in the world. She's worked with a galaxy of A-list stars including Madonna, George Michael, David Bowie and The Spice Girls. Following on from Instructions for Happiness and Success, which is a best-selling book, Susie is proud to launch The Art of Creativity. This inspiring new book explains to the reader how to adopt 7 powerful habits that will unlock your full creative potential and keep you positive. Here she explains how to eat well, so we can be the most creative version of ourselves…
“Food is fuel and our performance and emotional wellbeing is hugely affected by what we put into our bodies by way of sustenance. Food affects the way we feel because of the chemicals produced when we digest what we've eaten. Small changes in diet can make a big impact on our energy levels and vibrancy, which in turn affects our ability to be the most creative version of ourselves.
When we eat mindfully and with awareness, we make different decisions about what we put into our body, and when we bring awareness to the meal in front of us, we are better able to absorb the nutrients and digest our food properly. That is because signals are sent to our digestive system via our senses, so taste, smell and take a good look at the food you are eating. Relax for ten minutes after eating to allow your digestive system to do its work.
As the saying goes, 'you are what you eat', so choose food with a life force to it. Eating simply, cutting out refined and processed foods, and filling your diet with fresh, wholesome food will make you feel better and think more clearly. I cut out refined sugar after reading about the increased links to cancer. As a cancer survivor myself, being aware of the relationship between the two made it easier for me to focus on where and how I was consuming too much refined sugar, and then to make conscious alternative choices. I noticed that when I was consuming sugar, I would experience highs of energy followed by a crash. Cutting out sugar stopped these lows and has allowed me to feel more evenly balanced throughout the day.
In the morning, I drink pure lemon juice in water, which helps to balance the body's pH levels and gets your digestive system moving. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the sour taste of lemon stimulates the agni, your internal fire, which helps to jump-start the digestive system, enabling better absorption of vitamins and minerals while preventing the build-up of toxins. Lemons are also high in vitamin C – a primary antioxidant that protects cells from damaging free radicals.
Keeping well hydrated is also important to make sure that your mind is clear and sharp. Curb the caffeine, kick out fizzy drinks and aim to drink at least 2 litres of good-quality water every day.”
