Massingberd-Mundy Distillery celebrates the characters of Charles Burrell and Marie Jeanne Rapigeon with the perfect his and hers gin

South Ormsby Estate's most enigmatic, stylish and visionary couple have been reunited once again thanks to two new gins from Massingberd-Mundy Distillery in the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Making perfect 'his and hers' gifts, Burrell's Dry, and Marie Jeanne Pink gins have been distilled to celebrate Charles Burrell Massingberd and his socialite wife Marie Jeanne Rapigeon of Versailles. The new gins have been blended with their characters at their heart.

Flirtatious and fascinating, as the maid to Charles Burrell's daughter Harriet, Marie Jeanne had liaisons with the likes of Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon, Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis Philippe and Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

She married Burrell in 1788 after the death of his first wife Anne, and brought a Parisian elegance to the estate for many years. She took over in 1802 following the death of her husband, and she lived there until her own death at the age of 99 in 1863.

By then she'd become so well loved by the locals that she was referred to fondly as Old Madame Massingberd.

Massingberd-Mundy Distillery's dedicated Marie Jeanne Pink Gin reflects her character with its fruity and indulgent French-style flavour, paying tribute to an inspirational woman, with impeccable dress sense, exuberance, wit and sass. She'd fled the French Revolution to become the Massingberd family's governess, and was described by one politician as “a wonder of the world”.

Master Distiller Tristan Jørgensen said: “We choose Marie Jeanne Rapigeon for our Pink gin mainly because she was the young second wife to Charles Burrell Massingberd. We are not sure what brought the daughter of a French General, from the Kingdom of Versailles to the Lincolnshire Wolds, but what we do know is that she was as sophisticated as she was glamorous.”

Both the bottle and the pink gin for Marie Jeanne are a nod to French elegance and class, while the addition of red berries create a fun loving and fruity burst.

To perfectly complement Marie Jeanne's frivolous nature, Burrell's London Dry Gin exudes the sophistication of its namesake, a man of vision, who transformed the South Ormsby Estate.

It's a classic, smooth and crisp London Dry Gin which builds on tradition with a contemporary, fruity flavour. This dry and elegant gin mirrors Charles's practicality, style and charm.

Tristan said: “We chose Charles Burrell Massingberd for our London Dry Gin, as he was a forward thinker, a squire with a real vision for the estate and a man impeccable style. He redesigned the hall for the better and expanded it greatly, shaping the hall into what it is today.”

When the couple took over they transformed South Ormsby Hall to reflect their more modern tastes. After her husband passed away, Marie Jeanne continued to run the estate, building a school and a rectory which survive to this day.
