Aldi's Artisan Cheeses, £1.49, Available 23rd July

Supermarket Aldi has committed to support British suppliers by taking nearly four tonnes of surplus stock from artisan cheesemakers whose businesses have been affected by Covid-19.  Following the closure of restaurants and deli counters, many producers were left with unsold fresh cheese with a limited shelf life on their hands.

From Thursday 23rd July, Aldi will be introducing a limited-time Specialbuy, offering a variety of artisan cheeses including Norfolk Mardler, Cornish Blue and Sussex Charmer priced at a purse-friendly £1.49 each.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “Aldi is committed to supporting farmers, growers and suppliers throughout the UK, which is especially important during these difficult times. Cheese is a staple product on most people's shopping list, and we hope our customers enjoy these high-quality cheeses knowing they've helped small British businesses when they needed it most.”

Aldi's British Artisan Cheese selection includes:

Cotswold Brie (100g) - The strong but sweet flavour of this regionally produced cheese makes it an enjoyable addition to a cheeseboard.  Produced by the Weaver family, they continue to follow traditional organic farming methods to create some of the UK's best tasting cheeses.  The Cotwold Brie is made using organic milk from cows grazing on their own farm.  All cheeses are made by hand allowing the products to be called truly Artisan.

Norfolk Mardler (150g) - Made in Honingham, near Norwich, this cheese is matured for eight weeks to produce a hard goat's cheese with a creamy and tangy flavour profile.  Share with friends as you catch up for a socially-distanced 'mardle' (gossiping – for those not familiar with Norfolk dialect).

Cornish Blue (125g) - a traditional English blue cheese with a twist. Churned near Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, it has a mild yet creamy flavour, packed with butter-like richness and a gentle sweetness.

Sussex Charmer (100g) - a charming and tasty true British cheddar from Rudgwick, in West Sussex. The mature farmhouse cheddar is packed full of flavour with an added punch from parmesan, making it an ideal accompaniment to pasta.

Yorkshire Blue (100g) - this blue veined cheese is buttery yet sweet. Churned in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, the cow's milk cheese is milder than other blue cheeses.

Aldi's artisan cheeses will be in stores from 23rd July.

Notes to editors:

Aldi is Britain's fifth largest supermarket with 880 stores and more than 34,000 employees.

Aldi is attracting hundreds of thousands of new customers every year with its range of exclusive brands, passing low operating costs on to customers in the form of low prices.

The supermarket believes in making every day amazing and that's why every single day Aldi delivers on the best possible value for millions of families throughout the UK and Ireland across everything from award-winning fresh produce to world class gin.

Aldi won't be beaten on price; consistently racks up award after award for quality; treats its suppliers with fairness and respect and recognises the responsibility of supporting valued institutions such as Team GB to demonstrate the importance of health and wellness. That's Aldi. That's everyday amazing. The reason they do this? Because Aldi believes that everyone should have access to fresh, healthy, affordable food…it's a right, not a privilege.

The company's current achievements and initiatives include:

  • Aldi is the UK's lowest priced supermarket. Research released by Which? in July showed customers doing a full shop at Tesco will currently spend 23% more than they would for the same goods at Aldi. And those shopping at Sainsbury's would have spent 30% more than at Aldi. It tracked the price of nearly 80 essential items at the UK's eight biggest supermarkets throughout June 2020.
  • Aldi has a five-year partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust – its fundraising target of £5m will go towards helping the trust to reach out to every young person with cancer in the UK.
  • Aldi's rates of pay are significantly higher than the Government's National Living Wage and also above the Living Wage Foundation's recommended national rates. Store Assistants receive a minimum hourly rate of £9.40 nationally and £10.90 in London.
  • Aldi is the official supermarket partner of Team GB and ensures every member of the team has access to fresh healthy Aldi food via monthly shopping vouchers, and that 1.2 million 5-14 year olds will learn about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy food via its Get Set to Eat Fresh education initiative. Aldi has been a partner since 2015 and has extended its commitment to the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.
  • In May 2020, for the seventh consecutive year, Aldi was ranked the best-performing supermarket for compliance with the Groceries Supply Code of Practice, underlining its commitment to maintaining fair, predictable and sustainable prices within its supply chain.
