- Deliveroo commits £1million to develop healthier takeaway brands and support restaurants to offer healthy meals across the UK this year.
- The number of healthy orders on Deliveroo has risen by 181% over the past 3 years, as seven in ten people say they want to see an increase of healthy options on food delivery apps.
- The desire for healthy choices is particularly prevalent amongst young people, with a staggering nine in ten among the 18-24 year old age group saying that they would buy food for delivery more regularly if there was a wider selection of healthy meals.
- Deliveroo's new health consultancy service for partner restaurants will accelerate the development of healthier menus.
- This investment supports Deliveroo's aim to become the leader for nutritious, healthy and affordable takeaway options.
Deliveroo today announces plans to spend £1 million promoting healthy eating across the UK and bringing greater choice to UK consumers in 2020
This major investment will increase the range of healthy options on the platform and will support partner restaurants in developing healthy meals and menus.
This new £1 million investment comes after Deliveroo:
- Witnessed a sharp increase in demand for healthy food over the past three years, with a 181% rise in healthy orders;
- Reached a milestone of 4,000 healthy restaurants on the Deliveroo platform - an increase of 257% over the past three years;
- Created a healthy 'shortcut' which makes it even easier for customers to find the healthy food they want. This has already been used by tens of thousands of customers in the UK and has now launched globally.
- Witnessed a 330% increase in orders of vegan dishes over the past two years with Vegatsu, Wagamama, the most ordered in 2019.
Deliveroo is tapping into a growing consumer trend. While there are more consumers ordering healthy food online, exclusive polling by Deliveroo shows that 69% of Brits would like to be able to order more healthy options through food delivery apps (18% don't) and 67% would order more regularly if there was a greater availability of healthy options (21% would not).
Nor is the trend confined to London. Deliveroo data shows that cities such as Exeter (359%) Newcastle, (273%) Cardiff, (251%) Leicester (248%) and Sheffield (205%) have seen a faster demand for healthy meals than the capital (193%) over the past three years.
The desire for healthy choices on food delivery apps is particularly prevalent amongst young people, with 89% of 18-24 year olds saying that they would buy food for delivery more regularly if there was a wider selection of healthy meals (4% would not).
This underlines that Deliveroo is responding to a growing consumer demand in developing and promoting healthier options throughout 2020.
Deliveroo's £1 million healthy eating investment includes:
- Providing a consultancy service to restaurant partners to help them increase healthy options
Deliveroo is launching a new consultancy service for restaurant partners to help them successfully develop their own healthy menus and meals.
The company will harness its unique data science and insights to identify suitable cuisines, dishes and price points. It will then work with selected partners to provide nutritionist support with menu design, ingredient sourcing, staff training, branding and marketing investment.
This service reduces the risk for restaurant partners as the healthy options will reflect local consumer demand and trends. Restaurant partners can have increased confidence these new menus and dishes will result in stronger business growth.
The first of these new healthy menus is in partnership with Barburrito. Working with the registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert, Deliveroo and Barburrito have created 'The RhiNourish Bowl' to enhance the existing 'Twisted Health Kitchen' menu. The 'RhiNourish Bowl' is packed with delicious ingredients, including fresh spinach, rainbow slaw, avocado and omega seeds.
- Developing new, nutritious delivery-only brands, which will be licensed to restaurant partners
Deliveroo is developing a new generation of nutritious, delivery-only brands for its restaurant partners to operate from their kitchens. Deliveroo designs and creates each brand from scratch, developing everything from its name to recipes for menu items, and will provide detailed guidance to restaurants on how to run it.
Deliveroo will own the name and logo of the brand, but partners will operate the brands out of their own kitchens.
The first of these brands is the 'Dream Burger' menu. This is a range of healthy, affordable and tasty burgers and sides, such as the plant-based burger "sweet valley vegan burger". Each dish has been created in an exclusive partnership with registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert.
Will Shu, founder and CEO of Deliveroo, said:
"Deliveroo's approach is simple. We want to increase the choice of delicious, healthy takeaways to our customers in 2020.
"That is why we are investing £1million this year to develop a range of nutritious menus and support restaurants to offer healthy meals across the UK."
Rhiannon Lambert, a registered nutritionist, said:
"I have teamed up with Deliveroo and devised a range of healthy takeaway options. We have created a menu of mouth-wateringly quick, affordable and nutritious meals.
"The partnership aims to combine my experience as a Registered Nutritionist with Deliveroo's nationwide reach to increase the number of healthy takeaway options across the nation.
"Our approach couldn't be more straightforward. We want to boost healthy eating patterns across the UK and dispel the belief that healthy food is expensive, hard to find and can't taste delicious."
Morgan Davies, CEO and Founder, Barburrito said:
"We have always been passionate about serving fresh, healthy ingredients to consumers across the UK.
"Twisted Health Kitchen is an exciting way of delivering food that is delicious and nutritious, straight to your door. We are now excited about partnering with Rhiannon Lambert and the Rhitrition team to take this to the next level!"
