When most of us pick up a snack, the main reason we buy it is because we’ve either eaten it before, we’re intrigued by the flavour or perhaps the calories are on our side – essentially, it’s what’s on the inside that drives our decision. Often, we don’t consider the outside. We’re used to what we know.
When it comes to plastic packaging, it’s versatile, cheap and durable – making it an easy choice for companies just focused on the bottom line. But it’s also damaging the environment, suffocating our oceans and polluting our land at an unprecedented rate. According to a recent confused.com survey*, 52% of the public want manufacturers to reduce plastic packaging and 40% think recycling rules should be simplified. This is where PULSÍTOS – a challenger startup – is refusing to follow the crowd heralding a new age of Socially Responsible Snacking.
Supported by Virgin Startup and RedBull Social Innovation, PULSÍTOS recently launched their zero plastic, fully recyclable and completely compostable snack packs. Meaning once you’ve finished the high protein, high fibre snack on the inside, it’s a case of either putting the outside into a recycling bin for it to be infinitely reused or a food bin for it to be or returned to the ground as nothing more than soil within a few months. It’s 0% waste, 100% of the time. A unique proposition for the travel and leisure market – which is under increasing pressure to reduce the amount of waste it produces.
An industry spokesperson said “[PULSÍTOS] have taken into consideration every concern people currently have about food and packaging and waste and addressed them – nicely done.”
With the sale of every pack, the company supports Trees for Cities, the UK charity focused on bringing more trees to the nation’s cities. It’s predicted that by 2030, 92.2% of the UK population will live in urban areas. As a consumer snack brand, PULSÍTOS know that the majority of their snacks will be consumed in offices, homes and bars across our towns and cities – “the more we can do to improve the overall health of cities, not just through what people are eating and throwing away but through what their breathing too, all’s the better. We’re a brand that stands for Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Cities. (Co-Founder, Laura Spencer).
PULSÍTOS are currently available to buy through the company’s website: pulsitos.com or wholesaler epicuriumc.o.uk.
