South Sands Hotel

Joining a sterling line up of Salcombe businesses, South Sands Hotel is taking part in the 3rd Salcombe Crabfest, taking place this year on Bank Holiday Sunday 6th May.

Supporting Salcombe's thriving fish and tourism industry Salcombe Crabfest has become a favourite fixture on the town's calendar and South Sands Hotel is proud to have executive chef Allister Bishop as the most local chef on the line up for the second year running.

Crabfest visitors will find Allister at midday in the demonstration kitchen on Island Street, alongside seven of the best chefs in the South West. For the second year running Allister will be showcasing Salcombe's finest crab via creative dishes including Closewool spiced lamb with Salcombe crab raita and Warm Salcombe crab with Thorn Park Farm Gloucester Old Spot belly pork

Commenting on South Sands Hotel's involvement, Allister says: “Crab is a firm favourite on our restaurant menu as it represents everything that we love about Salcombe; the fresh, quality seafood available on our doorstep, the community of fishermen we're proud to call friends as well as suppliers and the versatility of seasonal produce I build the South Sands menu around.

“With this in mind we're delighted to be supporting Crabfest again this year, I'm looking forward to hosting a demo alongside such fantastic chefs. It's encouraging to see both local Salcombe and Kingsbridge names alongside nationally-known visiting chefs, and I feel privileged to be on such a crab-tastic line up!”

South Sands Hotel recently partnered with Crabfest sponsor Favis of Salcombe to host 'Cracking Salcombe', an event entirely dedicated to, and in celebration of, the Salcombe Crab. This event was postponed due to the recent bad weather so contact South Sands if you'd like to find out when it will be rescheduled.

Entry to the Crabfest is free, full details can be found on the website: https://salcombecrabfest.co.uk

“It's got to be the best seaside spot in Britain. South Sands snuggles right up to the beach of the same name, and at high tide, the waves slop almost up to the fabulous wraparound terrace – a fine spot for dinner when it's warm, and a fabulous one for breakfast with the sun rising over the low hills across the estuary. The chef, Allister Bishop, produces an ambitious menu that's big on local ingredients, some foraged – fish crab, sea lettuce, purslane. The 22 rooms are neutral in décor, but eminently comfy: it's all about the views over the sumptuous, boat-filled waterway. So splash out, get a room at the front, then sit back and watch the traffic.” Sunday Times Ultimate 100 British Hotels, October 2016
