In 2017 Laura and Aran Cheatle opened Pig and Pepper, a bakery and deli in Buxton specialising in handmade bread and local produce. Open Tuesday to Saturday on the market place, the shop serves freshly baked bread and pastries including sourdough, rye, focaccia and a selection of rolls, loaves and cakes.
There's a small gift selection of chocolates, blended coffee, condiments, spices and biscuits. Deli items are sourced locally, including oils and crackers from Derbyshire, cheese from Cheshire and the duo will soon be rolling out their own homemade biscuits and preserves, as well as hot sandwiches, cakes and soups for lunch to take away.
Pig and Pepper is also the only place in the UK where you can get an official Croissage Roll ® - a hand-made croissant sausage roll featured on BBC Radio Derby. As Laura explains “The sweet buttery pastry pairs fantastically with sausage, and we also have a range of other fillings in production each month. At the moment our maple-marinated bacon and butternut squash croissages are going down a storm!”
Laura, who is part of the Bread Angels network, also heads up Pig and Pepper's bread school where students learn how to make and bake bread in a domestic kitchen. The Introduction to Bread Making classes launched in early January and dates for the Introduction to Sourdough classes will be added in spring.
