Acquisition Catapults Eversfield Organic to a Market Leader

Eversfield Organic

Already a serious player in the organic and grass-fed meat sector, Eversfield Organic has acquired The Well Hung Meat Company, taking effect as of Thursday 16th November 2017. The acquisition places Eversfield Organic in the top three organic box delivery businesses nationwide.

The two businesses are based on either side of Dartmoor in Devon. The Well Hung Meat Company is an organic meat business based in Buckfastleigh whilst family-run organic farm, Eversfield Organic is positioned just outside Okehampton in Bratton Clovelly.  By joining forces, they will extend the already outstanding offering of organic meat and other organic produce, which both are renowned for, thereby providing an even better service to customers.

Adding further weight ongoing, founding director of The Well Hung Meat Company, Geoff Sayers, will become a non-executive director of Eversfield Organic.

Commenting on the acquisition, Mark Bury, founder and director of Eversfield Organic, says:

“Geoff and I have always shared similar principles and our values in terms of organic are aligned. We have enjoyed a competitive, but friendly business relationship.”

Mark continues: “The increased scale of the consolidated business will give us the strength and breadth within the industry, ensuring we can continue to innovate and provide great organic meat and produce to as many people as possible.  The organic market is a challenging arena for producers to survive in financially, however the economies of scale this acquisition brings will help drive profitability.”

On a final note, Mark says: “Our core priority will be to ensure that the transition runs smoothly and that both The Well Hung Meat Company and our existing customers are looked after with the utmost care and attention.”

On behalf of The Well Hung Meat Company, Geoff says: “The Eversfield team is committed and experienced so this is great news for the staff, suppliers and customers of The Well Hung Meat Company.  Mark and I both share the same view that the best meat comes from happy, naturally reared animals from traditional breeds.  It is, therefore, an entirely logical move for the two companies to become one.”  Geoff continues: “I look forward to working alongside the team at Eversfield Organic whilst also having more time to concentrate on our large dairy business and Carswell Cottages.”

The perks for existing customers of both are clear.  As well as the meat being organic and grass fed, Eversfield Organic produce is sent fresh, not pre-frozen.  The meat is butchered on the day of despatch, arriving at the customer's door the following day, it could not be fresher.  It is still 'well hung' as the beef is hung for a minimum of 21 days with premium rib joints and so forth hanging for up to 35 days.

The Well Hung Meat Company customers will benefit from a much wider range of produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy and cheese, wild fish, bread and baked goods, deli items, award-winning charcuterie and sweet treats – all certified organic and most produce hailing from the South West.  There will also be more delivery options.  Customers can choose deliveries from Tuesday to Saturday plus opt for priority slots pre-10.30am and pre-12 o'clock if a morning delivery is required.  A text message will be sent on the morning of the delivery with a one-hour time slot when the box will arrive.  Customers will have more time to vary repeat boxes, up to four days before their delivery day, either online or over the phone.  They will be able to choose between one-off orders or deliveries of a regular box.

About Eversfield Organic

Eversfield Organic is the lifelong dream of Mark and Emily Bury along with Mark's daughter, Anna, and son, Hamish.  Mark always strived to provide his family with the finest quality food produced in an honest and natural way with animal welfare at its heart, and wanted this to be available to all.

Kick-starting it all, Mark bought the farm 15 years ago and spent two back-breaking years planting over 30,000 trees, reinstating miles of hedgerows and laying fencing to nurture the land back to its natural state after years of intensive farming.

Once the trees had taken root and the natural flora was flourishing once again, wildlife in the area began to return and the soil was rejuvenated.  After months of toil, the farm was finally granted organic status in 2004.

Working with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, Mark began rearing his own herd of native Aberdeen Angus cattle, fed on a 100% pasture diet. This means animals are only ever fed grasses and wildflower – never grain. Mark also introduced a flock of grass fed sheep to keep the meadows mown, and organic pigs were kept busy clearing scrub from the farm's woodland.

From 2004, Eversfield Organic began their organic box scheme – offering fresh, Soil Association organic certified meat for delivery to people's homes – from their own grass fed organic beef and lamb, to organic pork, poultry and wild game.

Gradually, organic dairy, deli items, fruit & vegetables, wild fish and baked goods have made it onto the online farm shop. With a growing following, stretching far and wide (even as far as the Hebrides!), Eversfield has continued to grow its selection of incredible South West organic produce.

As has always been the case, Eversfield Organic's main priority is quality; from the health of the soil and lustre of the pasture, the high standard of animal welfare, the skilled team of butchers showing off their traditional methods in the state-of-the-art, fully EU licensed butchery on the farm; right through to the moment grocery boxes reach customers' doors.
